Chikuntho pride

Lion pride in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.

The Chinkuntho Pride is a pride of five lionesses that originated from the larger Kakuli Pride. In 2013, a major pride takeover caused the Kakuli Pride, which then consisted of around 12 lionesses, to split apart. Following the takeover, the incoming males forced five of the lionesses further south, where they eventually established a territory of their own. Over time, these females formed a new pride, which became known as the Chinkuntho Pride. The pride takes its name from the renowned Chinkuntho Safari Lodge, located within their range. Today, the Chinkuntho Pride is recognised as one of the established lion prides of South Luangwa National Park, with its origins serving as a remarkable example of how lion prides can adapt and rebuild following territorial upheaval.
