The intruders

Male lion coalition in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.

The Intruders The Intruders is the temporary name given by safari guides to a formidable coalition of six young adult male lions, estimated to be between 3½ and 4 years old, that has recently entered the Mfuwe region of South Luangwa National Park. Over the past month, the coalition has been moving extensively through the area, ranging from Lupungar Spur to the Chinkuntho area. Their arrival has brought significant upheaval to the resident lion populations. The coalition is believed to be responsible for killing a Mfuwe Pride lioness and her cubs approximately two weeks ago. This event is thought to have been part of their effort to establish dominance and take control of the prides within the region. Since then, The Intruders have continued to patrol and move throughout the area, placing increasing pressure on the resident coalitions, particularly the Mfuwe Males and the luwi. Their movements are being closely monitored by guides as they continue to test territorial boundaries and search for opportunities to claim new prides. Although still relatively young, their numbers, strength, and coordinated movements make them a formidable coalition. Whether The Intruders succeed in establishing themselves as the region's dominant males remains to be seen, but they have already become one of the most significant new lion coalitions in the Mfuwe area in recent years.
