Mumbulu Males

Male lion coalition in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.

The Mumbulu Males are a dominant coalition of two brothers that control the Mumbulu Pride and the surrounding Mumbulu Hills territory, the northernmost part of South Luangwa National Park. This remote wilderness covers approximately 15,000 hectares and is renowned for its rugged beauty and abundant wildlife. The coalition originally consisted of three brothers. However, since 2022, only two brothers have remained together. In 2023, they successfully took over the Mumbulu Pride and have since established themselves as the dominant males of the region. The two brothers are regularly seen resting in the dry Mumbulu River bed, from which both the area and the pride derive their name. Their strength and partnership have enabled them to defend their territory and maintain control over the pride in one of the most remote and spectacular parts of South Luangwa National Park.
