Mufwe young males
Male lion coalition in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.
Born around 2023, the six Young Mufewe Males are a closely bonded coalition of brothers from the Mufewe Pride. At approximately 3–3½ years old, they are now entering an important stage of their development, gradually becoming independent and exploring territory beyond their natal pride. Around 2 September 2026, the six brothers moved away from the Mufewe Pride following the presence of the dominant Black Mufewe male. Rather than being forcibly pushed out, their departure appears to be a natural movement as they begin establishing themselves away from their birth pride. The brothers have since been roaming the northwestern areas of the park, including the Sprung, Kakuli and Luwi areas. Their most recent sighting was on 10 September 2026 in the Kakuli area, where they were seen associating with female lions from the Rui Pride. This association is particularly interesting because the coalition of three dominant Jumkoto Rui males has reportedly not been seen for approximately two months. The presence of the young Mufewe brothers alongside Rui females could therefore be worth monitoring closely, although it is still too early to determine what this association may mean for the future. At just three to three and a half years old, these six brothers are still young for fully established male lions, but their strength lies in their numbers and their close bond. As they continue roaming together, their movements and interactions with the Rui females—and the absence of the established Rui males—could make this a fascinating coalition to follow in the coming months.
