Mapogo Coalition

Male lion coalition in Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa. Also known as: Mapogo Males, Mapogo Six, Band of Brothers.

The Mapogo Coalition was a legendary coalition of six male lions that dominated the Sabi Sand Game Reserve in South Africa between roughly 2006 and 2012. The brothers — Makulu (the leader), Rasta, Pretty Boy, Kinky Tail, Mr. T and Dreadlocks — became famous for their extraordinary aggression and cooperation, taking over a vast territory and numerous prides, including the Othawa Pride. Their story of brotherhood, brutal territorial warfare and eventual decline was told in the acclaimed documentary "Brothers in Blood: The Lions of Sabi Sand" (2015), making them arguably the most famous lion coalition ever recorded.
